“Just ten large agribusinesses are responsible for producing almost double the excrement that is produced by the 10 largest cities in the UK, new analysis from Sustain and Friends of the Earth has found. All supply to major UK retailers, and none were found to have policies to prevent pollution leeching into waterbodies.“
Materiality mapped the regions where the dominant meat agribusinesses operate across the UK and which supermarkets they supply. By comparing regulatory data to Companies House records, we plotted the slaughterhouses and factory farms where the owner or ultimate owner is one of the top 5 meat integration companies. However, most factory farms are not owned by these companies but by contracted farmers. We used information from agribusiness animal welfare reports to determine the areas where each agribusiness is most likely to operate. Farms within these areas are most likely to supply the respective agribusiness. The report is intended to be a resource for campaigning on environmental pollution in these areas, click here to read the full report.
